My name is Madeline and I live and work in small town coastal BC. My work as an interior designer for a custom home builder introduces me to all sorts of products and techniques, but I don’t always have the opportunity to fully explore them. Every design style has aspects that I love and here I want to dive into the truly unique, detailed and interesting parts of them to help me find my true authentic style, organize my thoughts and perhaps help you find some inspiration as well.

Home to me is lived in. It’s sometimes messy, far from perfect and yet brings you a sense of calm and comfort the moment you set eyes on it. Yes, there are a million little jobs to do like weed the garden patch outside your window, re-paint that wall your kid took crayons to, or fix that door that has a relentless squeak. But these jobs are a joy if you love your home. You are surrounded by your treasured possessions and your family. Home should emphasize these things you love and help you live the way that you want to.

I have always been drawn to sustainability and resourcefulness. I worked for years in the waste management industry and while I learned a lot, it wasn’t fulfilling my need for creativity. I then opened a zero-waste grocery store, and after reflecting on the process I realized that that designing the store and building it out was my favourite part. I loved the store but my creative itch was only getting stronger. I then had an ‘Ah Ha’ moment when I realized I could combine my love for design and sustainability and turn it into a career. I went and got a diploma in Interior Design and reached out to the top custom home builder focusing on high efficiency homes…and they hired me! Then the real education began.

Free Form Home was created as a space to dive into the products and techniques that I am exposed to at work that I want to take a closer look at. I want everyone to be able to create the home of their dreams in a sustainable way that will improve not only their quality of life but their well being also.
